USDA Restricts PACA Violators in Florida, Georgia, New York and Texas from Operating in the Produce Industry

@FDACommissioner

  • FOOD SAFETY ALERT: #FDA and Mexican health authorities are investigating 5 Shigella illnesses linked to oysters harvested between Feb. 12 & Apr. 9 from Estero El Cardon, in Baja California Sur, Mexico & distributed to CA, NV, AZ, NY.
  • Mexican officials closed the harvesting areas May 7, so there should not be product currently available to consumers. As of today, products from the harvest dates of Apr. 9 to May 7 have been destroyed. Additionally, the shelf-life of fresh, raw oysters is limited.
  • Shigella is a bacterium that spreads from contaminated feces, often through unclean water. Although shigellosis is often mild and goes away by itself in a week or less, it can become very serious in some cases. Consumers should contact a health professional if they have symptoms.
  • Shigella infection generally starts 8 hours to about 2 days after exposure, and causes abdominal pain, fever and diarrhea known as dysentery. Young children, the elderly, and those with weak immune systems are more likely to develop severe illness. https://go.usa.gov/xmwF8
