Jurisdiction and Enforcement Authority Directory
This map indicates which state agency (health, agriculture, or other) have regulatory authority over food service establishments and retail food stores within each state. In states where there is more than one color (split) there are two state agencies with authority. In states with split jurisdictions, typically, departments of health or other agencies have responsibility over food service establishments and departments of agriculture have authority over retail food stores. Numbers appearing within the state map indicate the number of local agencies with retail inspection authority within that state. Users can mouse “click” on a state on the map or state name below the map to be redirected to the AFDO Retail Food Regulatory Program Directory for that state. From the directory, users can access state and local program contacts and general jurisdictional authorities such as Food Code version adopted, bare hand contact prohibitions, Certified Food Protection Manager requirements and food handler training requirements.
