@SteveFDA

  • We at FDA continue to help widen access to hand sanitizers during the #COVID19 public health emergency. We updated our guidances to provide clarification on manufacturing and compounding of certain alcohol-based hand sanitizers products. http://fda.gov/news-events/press-announcements/coronavirus-covid-19-update-fda-takes-action-protect-public-health-increase-supply-alcohol-based
  • The safety of consumers and health care personnel is a top priority for FDA. We’re working with industry to increase access to hand sanitizers and ensure that harmful levels of impurities are not present in ethanol used in these products.
  • As demand for alcohol-based hand sanitizer surged, we issued temporary policies to provide flexibility to help meet this demand and get supply quickly to where it was needed, whether for health care professionals or individuals and their families.
  • Although some larger hospital systems have been able to replenish their supply, we continue to hear that some smaller hospital systems and outpatient facilities are still experiencing difficulties accessing alcohol-based hand sanitizers.
  • We recognize that many consumers may not be able to find alcohol-based hand sanitizer locally. Washing our hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds is still one of our best defenses to prevent the spread of #COVID19.
  • I just spoke to the Alliance for a Stronger FDA about #COVID19. I emphasized the principles I have applied to @US_FDA decisions during this crisis, the major one being that all decisions must be based on good science.
  • This is a principle I have brought to all my work and I have been pleased to see, in action, that the principle of good science is embedded in #FDA’s DNA. This is why the public can have confidence in #FDA as we move together through these unique times. @StrengthenFDA
  • In my speech to the Alliance for a Stronger FDA, I also made clear that FDA is learning from this crisis and that some of our policies & processes will change permanently. I’ve asked my staff to recommend appropriate changes, and I expect #FDA to emerge stronger from this crisis.
