#FDA is aware of increased reports of injuries associated w/foods prepared w/liquid nitrogen immediately before consumption. We’re working w/stakeholders to better understand its use. We have issued a safety alert warning consumers about potential risks.#ThingsYouShouldNeverAssume: That natural on the label means safe. Make informed decisions when taking dietary supplements. https://go.usa.gov/xPqKY- THREAD – 1/5
#FDA conducts surveillance sampling and testing of certain foods available in U.S. to monitor the microbial risk and prevalence of foodborne pathogens: https://go.usa.gov/xUhGa - 2/5 While federal health officials are seeing a number of outbreaks from cyclospora this year, it is likely in part due to advances in technology that allow us to better track the parasite
- 3/5 Cyclospora cayetanensis is a parasite composed of one cell, too small to be seen w/ out a microscope, causing an intestinal infection called cyclosporiasis. People get sick by ingesting food or water that was contaminated w/ the parasite.
- 4/5 We can better monitor for cyclospora thanks to FDA scientists who developed & validated a new lab analytical method to test for the parasite in foods. Significant advancement in our ability to investigate outbreaks associated w/ cyclospora & prevent people from getting sick
- 5/5 Cyclospora outbreaks in U.S. are historically linked to imported fresh produce, but recent sampling confirmed cyclospora in cilantro at a U.S. distributor & U.S. farm as well as from 2 samples of cilantro offered for import. No illnesses currently associated w/ these products
- FDA recommends avoiding eating or touching
#DragonsBreath or similar foods. These foods are prepared by adding liquid#nitrogen immediately before being eaten and are served at extremely low temperatures that can cause burn-like injuries. https://go.usa.gov/xPqxv
