It is with a heavy heart that I inform you of the passing of W. Michael Rogers, a former ORA District Director (DD) and father of Michael C. Rogers; Michael C. Rogers is currently acting assistant commissioner for the Office of Human and Animal Food Operations.

W. Michael Rogers started his 37-year FDA career as an analytical chemist in the Kansas City lab in 1964.  During his commendable FDA career, he worked in several districts including Baltimore, as a pesticide residue specialist, and later at ORA Headquarters, in the Division of Field Science.  In 1979 he  accepted a position with the United Nations as a senior project advisor in Kaduna, Nigeria, where he assisted in establishing their food sanitation and testing agency.  W. Michael Rogers returned to the U.S. FDA in 1989, and served as director of the Kansas City District Office (KAN-DO) until his retirement in 1999.

During his time as the DD in KAN-DO, the District was awarded the “President’s National Performance Review” award in 1996, which was presented by the Office of the Vice President.  In his acceptance speech, Rogers stated, “The Kansas City District now achieves its mission of consumer protection by forging partnerships with industry to achieve cooperation and common purpose, not confrontation.  The employees in Kansas City take great pride in accepting the award.”
