About
Clear, accurate, and well-documented inspection reports are the foundation of effective regulatory programs and enforcement actions. Writing Observations: Write It Right provides inspectors with the practical skills needed to write inspection observations and violation narratives that are actual, factual, defensible, and easy to understand.
Participants will learn how to document observations using detailed field notes, describe conditions objectively, and communicate public health significance through clear and concise reporting. The course emphasizes observation-based writing, proper documentation of corrective actions, and techniques for producing reports that withstand supervisory, legal, and public scrutiny.
Through interactive exercises and real-world examples, attendees will practice converting vague statements into specific and defensible observations, writing inspection narratives from photographs, distinguishing facts from opinions, applying active voice, and including effective elements in each statement. By the end of the course, participants will be able to develop inspection reports that clearly tell the story of the inspection, support informed decision-making, and serve as reliable records for future inspections, trend analysis, and enforcement activities.
