Session 1

Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance for Food Safety

Summary: The increased concern around antimicrobial resistance (AMR) globally has led to some interesting challenges for oversight both domestically and internationally. This series of speakers will introduce and discuss the National Antimicrobial Monitoring System (NARMS) and provide some examples of its application in monitoring and evaluating the risk of AMR while maintaining a safe human and animal food supply chain.

Regulatory & Industry Challenges: PFAS in Food, Beverage, and Consumer Products

Summary: In this session, speakers will discuss some of the ongoing challenges with PFAS both from the regulatory and global industry perspectives. Speakers will discuss analysis and sampling challenges for regulatory applications as well as practical product development for consumer safety globally.

Heather Tate

Dr. Heather Tate

is currently the interim Science Lead for the National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System (NARMS) at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Veterinary Medicine. She has over 15 years of experience in the development and implementation of AMR surveillance systems and has published research on the molecular epidemiology of AMR in enteric bacteria. She holds a doctorate in biomedical science from New York University and a master’s degree in epidemiology from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health

Heather Barbottle

Dr. Heather Harbottle

is a Senior Regulatory Microbiology Reviewer at FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine, Office of New Drug Evaluation, in the Division of Human Food Safety.  Dr. Harbottle began her career with a Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology from Texas A&M, and earned her Ph.D. in Veterinary Medical Sciences at Louisiana State University.  Before joining the Microbial Food Safety team in 2010, Dr. Harbottle completed a post-doctoral study at CVM’s Office of Research and conducted research as a Principal Investigator in the Division of Animal and Food Microbiology on the molecular mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance in conjunction with the FDA’s National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System.  Dr. Harbottle is co-chair of CVM’s One Health ONADE Science and Discovery committee and is an Associate Member of the Global One Health Academy. Currently, in addition to her role as a reviewer for the microbial food safety team, Dr. Harbottle serves on the NARMS Leadership working group and on an interagency working group with EPA, CDC, and USDA to develop a framework for evaluating antifungal and antibacterial use on agricultural crops.  Internationally, she serves as an expert on the Joint WHO/FAO Expert Committee for Food Additives (JECFA) and presents international data requirements at VICH Public Meetings.

Dr. Susan Genualdi

Dr. Susan Genualdi

is currently a Research Chemist in the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition at the Food and Drug Administration.  Her research over the last 13 years has focused on developing methods for the analysis of direct and indirect food additives in food and food packaging and for the last 7 years has focused on PFAS analysis in foods. Prior to her work at the FDA, she received her PhD in Analytical Chemistry at Oregon State University and was a postdoctoral fellow at Environment Canada.

Taylor Reynolds

Taylor Reynolds

is the North American Sr. Commercial Marketing Manager covering Environmental Testing and Battery industries.  Taylor has been with MilliporeSigma for 8 years in various roles.  In 2020 Taylor started leading an internal working group to address the PFAS analytical needs of customers.  As the head of the MilliporeSigma PFAS Working Group, Taylor works with both internal and external partners developing app notes, new products and gathering customer feedback and needs to promote consumer safety.

Jared Rothstein

Jared Rothstein

is the Senior Director of Regulatory Affairs at the Consumer Brands Association, the trade association representing the consumer-packaged goods (CPG) industry. Jared serves as a subject matter expert on chemicals management-related regulatory and policy matters impacting food, beverage, personal care, and household products. Prior to joining Consumer Brands, Jared was engaged in regulatory matters impacting the specialty chemical manufacturing industry, including implementation of the 2016 Amendments to the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) as well as air, water, and waste regulations under other environmental statutes administered by the EPA.
