USDA

Statement by Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack on the Intent to Nominate Margo Schlanger to Serve as USDA Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights

GAO

Federal Strategy Needed to Coordinate Diet-Related Efforts

[Note: GAO was asked to review diet-related chronic health conditions and federal efforts to address them. This report examines (1) federal data on prevalence, mortality, and costs of selected diet-related chronic health conditions; (2) federal diet-related efforts to reduce Americans’ risk of chronic health conditions; and (3) the extent to which federal agencies have coordinated their efforts.  The report recommends that Congress consider identifying and directing a federal entity to lead development and implementation of a federal strategy for diet-related efforts aimed at reducing Americans’ risk of chronic health conditions.]

  • I am pleased with President Biden’s decision to nominate Margo Schlanger to serve as Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights. Her nomination cements USDA’s commitment to civil rights and equity as we work for the American people.
  • We have a tremendous opportunity. Let’s take it – and let’s work together to return the Earth to our children in better condition than we borrowed it. My full remarks at the G-20 Open Forum on Sustainable Agriculture Environmental Sustainability Panel https://usda.gov/media/transcripts-speeches/2021/09/16/agriculture-secretary-tom-vilsacks-remarks-g-20-open-forum
  • It was a pleasure to meet with Italian Agriculture Minister  @SPatuanelli, our gracious host for this week’s @G20org meeting here in Florence. Looking forward to working with him and our other G20 counterparts to tackle the global challenges facing agriculture.
  • This morning, Brazil Agriculture Minister @TerezaCrisMS and I discussed the importance of innovation & technology to improve productivity & promote more efficient, climate-smart use of natural resources. We also discussed joint efforts to stop the spread of ASF in the Americas.
  • Pleased to meet with my EU counterpart, @EUagri Commissioner Wojciechowski today while in Florence for @G20org. The U.S. & EU share common commitment to sustainability and climate-smart ag and when we take different approaches, we must make sure not to arbitrarily restrict trade.

  • Regulators from 25 countries participated in @FDA_Global’s Dialogue on Good Regulatory Practices today. Why the interest? #Regulations & regulatory frameworks that are modern, transparent, predictable, & rooted in #science & risk best protect & promote #publichealth.

@SecVilsack

  • At today’s G20 ministerial meeting, I reaffirmed USDA’s commitment to supporting markets that reward farmers who find more sustainable ways to produce. We must deliver on our sector’s need to fill the growing food demand, while transitioning to more sustainable practices.
  • Wrapping up G20 & looking ahead to @FoodSystems Summit &  @COP26, we must commit to action on challenges facing agriculture & our planet. The U.S. will work to build coalitions & consensus around sustainable productivity growth, climate, school feeding & other priorities.
  • As we depart the @G20org agriculture ministerial in Florence, we need to prepare for deeper discussions – and concrete actions – aimed at reorienting agriculture systems to be more economically efficient, environmentally sound, and socially just. https://g20.org/media/photos-and-videos/ministerial-meetings-media/agriculture-media.html
  • Our Nation has a duty to protect agricultural workers and promote safety education for farmers and farm families. Their success is our Nation’s success, and we must support them and their well-being as they feed, fuel, and clothe the world.
  • Farmworkers in America are the best in the world, and they have always faced the challenges of the job head-on. Their sacrifices are commendable, but they should not have to risk injury, illness, or death to do their jobs.
  • The Farm Workforce Modernization Act creates safer working conditions for farmworkers and lays the foundation for a pathway to citizenship.
