  • It was a pleasure to speak at today’s important public meeting on FDA’s Closer to Zero Action Plan. The plan sets forth our commitment to reducing exposure to toxic elements in foods commonly eaten by babies & young children to the lowest possible levels.
  • It has long been an FDA priority to protect babies and young children from the harmful effects of contaminants such as lead and arsenic.  We know they are especially susceptible to these dangers because of their smaller body sizes and metabolism.
  • Our plan outlines a multi-phase, science-based, iterative approach to achieving our goal of getting levels of toxic elements in foods closer to zero over time.
  • Today’s meeting is a critical component of this action plan. It is just the first of what we anticipate will be several public meetings on this critical topic.
  • And it is just one way that we will engage and collaborate with stakeholders to ensure that we hear a full range of experiences and opinions to inform our work and help us implement strong and effective policies.

  • During #COVID19, we had to rework our business operations while adhering to public health guidelines to mitigate the spread. Today, we’re proud to share that we’ve exceeded the goals set out in our May 2021 inspections report for completing domestic surveillance activities.

@US_FDA

  • Today we released an updated “Resiliency Roadmap” report highlighting our inspectional, surveillance and compliance activities during #COVID19, as well as the steps we’re taking to move toward full resumption of inspections. View the updated report here: https://fda.gov/media/154293/download
