Agriculture Department and Justice Department Issue Shared Principles and Commitments to Protect Against Unfair and Anticompetitive Practices

[Note: DOJ and USDA to develop a system for farmers, ranchers, and other producers to submit complaints about potential violations of antitrust laws and the Packers and Stockyards Act.]

@SecVilsack

  • Today, @TheJusticeDept and  @USDA are announcing a new joint initiative to better coordinate antitrust and market regulatory enforcement efforts—including launching within 30 days a new portal for reporting concerns about potential violations of the competition laws.
  • This summer, I met a farmer in Iowa who told me he lost $150 per head selling cattle to a processor who would end up making $1800 per head. He asked me: “Mr. Secretary, how is that fair?” It’s not.
  • The Biden Administration has the backs of America’s producers and consumers. We are here to get goods moving again and to return a larger share of the dollar to those growing and harvesting our food.
  • This afternoon, @POTUS and I will have a discussion with farmers and ranchers about the Biden-Harris Administration’s plan for a fairer, more competitive, and more resilient meat and poultry supply chain. Watch live at 1:30 pm ET. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ku4ot1dYRcA&feature=emb_logo

@WhiteHouse

Statement by Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack on USMCA Dairy Panel Ruling

Twitter

@US_FDA

  • FDA implemented temporary changes to its inspectional activities to ensure the safety of its employees and those of the firms it regulates as the agency further adapts to the evolving COVID-19 pandemic and the spread of the omicron variant.

@SecVilsack

  • RT Ambassador Katherine Tai: I’m pleased to announce that the U.S. has prevailed in the first dispute settlement panel ever brought under the #USMCA. It’s agreed that Canada is breaching its USMCA commitments by reserving most of its dairy tariff-rate quota for the exclusive use of CA processors.
  • Good news for U.S. dairy farmers. This enforcement action reflects the Biden-Harris Administration’s deep commitment to enforcing the USMCA and to ensuring that U.S. trade policy works for American farmers.
