Dear Dr. Wiedmann:
This letter is written in support of your USDA National Integrated Food Safety Initiative (NIFSI) Research and Extension Project Proposal entitled “Identification and Communication of Risk Factors and Control Strategies for Listeria Monocytogenes at Retail." Your proposed project is very critical and will assist the food protection community to better understand this pathogen so control strategies can be employed.
AFDO is the preeminent organization in the U.S. of federal, state and local regulatory officials, having promoted science-based food safety through the development of model laws and regulations and providing uniform training over its 115-year history. AFDO is also nationally recognized for advocating its vision for an integrated food safety system in this nation to eliminate duplication and gaps in our current system of regulating foods and to more effectively address the food safety challenges we all share. AFDO has also been very active in promoting education and training efforts targeted at the control of Listeria monocytogenes.
AFDO is confident that your proposed project should result in an improved ability to 1) identify risk factors for high prevalence and persistence of Listeria monocytogenes in retail deli environments, 2) develop control strategies to specifically reduce Listeria monocytogenes in retail delis, and; 3) develop appropriate education and training programs for the retail food industry.
AFDO supports your efforts to pursue this proposal, and please feel free to contact me should you need any additional information.
AFDO Executive Director
