The new Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point Training Curriculum 6th Edition (‘Blue Book’ - SGR 132) goes on sale June 1, 2017. This sixth edition includes some changes to improve the training program and the few additions regarding requirements introduced by the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA).

In related news, a one-page supplement has been added to the existing Sanitation Control Procedures for Processing Fish and Fishery Products training manual (‘Green Book’ - SGR 119).

Both training manuals feature changes in compliance with the new Good Manufacturing Practices-Part 117. They will be required in accordance with the SHA/AFDO Protocol for approved HACCP and SCP courses accompanied with certificates of course completion issued and recorded by AFDO.

The ‘blue book,’ the ‘green book’ and the current 2011 edition of the FDA Hazard Guide (SGR 129) can be purchased and delivered at the existing rate ($25 US/manual) through the UF/IFAS Extension Bookstore, https://ifasbooks.ifas.ufl.edu/, 352-392-1764 or 800-225-1764. These are the required training manuals for the Seafood HACCP Alliance (SHA) courses recognized with the AFDO course completion certificate.

    May 15, 2017

    Dear Colleagues,

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Office of Regulatory Affairs (ORA) is pleased to announce that effective May 15, 2017, the Division of Human Resource Development (DHRD) in the Office of Resource Management, will become the Office of Training, Education, and Development (OTED) as part of the FDA’s Program Alignment, a broad agency initiative that will modernize and strengthen the agency’s workforce by specialization and improve its public health response with more timely decision making.  This internal realignment as a direct report to ORA will enable OTED to train, educate and develop with greater quality, efficiency and capability.

Over the last several years, DHRD increased the amount of training and development provided to the regulatory community.  As programs expanded, DHRD gained visibility, internal and external attention, and outgrew its current structure.  Through ORA’s Program Alignment, it became clear that in order to be most effective, the training and development strategy needed to change.  The internal realignment from DHRD to OTED will improve the ability develop and deliver training events that are most valuable to stakeholders and will result in significant organizational impact.

OTED will continue DHRD’s charge to help its stakeholders realize their full potential through its many quality initiatives — that is what DHRD did and that is what OTED will continue to do.

Mission: The OTED Mission is to provide high quality learning opportunities through timely, cost-effective learning products that support FDA’s mission and strategic goals and meets current training and development needs of ORA personnel, state and local regulatory officials, and other stakeholders.

What We Do: ORA’s OTED is responsible for the training and development of a 5,000+ member staff located in ORA’s field and headquarters offices throughout the United States and Puerto Rico.  In addition, OTED is responsible for providing training to state and local regulatory agency staff involved in the regulation of food, drugs, and other commodities regulated by FDA.

The OTED is accredited by the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET) and is authorized to issue the IACET continuing education units (CEU).  As an IACET Accredited Provider, OTED offers CEUs for its programs that qualify under the American National Standards Institute IACET Standard.  The OTED is accredited by the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET) and is authorized to issue the IACET continuing education units (CEU).  As an IACET Accredited Provider, OTED offers CEUs for its programs that qualify under the American National Standards Institute IACET Standard.

Marijuana usage is growing in acceptability across the country, with changing regulations in many states, legalizing its use both recreationally and for medicinal purposes.   While these are exciting times for many, they raise questions about the safety of these products, and how should it be regulated and inspected.  Join NEHA for this informative webinar to explore the world of “Edibles.”   Edibles are produced for both medicinal and recreational use, and consumed in communities many local and state food safety agencies serve and protect.

    Speakers include:

    • Marc A. Nascarella, PhD, Chief Toxicologist from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, who will share environmental public health considerations in the evaluation of medical marijuana products.
    • Marlene Gaither, REHS, Environmental Health Program Manager, Coconino County Public Health Services District, who will share a recent marijuana edibles recall and challenges that the regulatory system experienced during it.
    • Cindy Rice, RS, CP-FS, Food Safety Specialist and President of Eastern Food Safety, who will share preventive controls and best practices that edible producers can put in place to minimize food safety risks and keep consumers safe, as well as aid regulators tasked with enforcing regulations and food safety.
