Actions Needed to Improve FDA Oversight of Import Alert Removal Decisions

@FrankYiannasFDA

  • ·        While millions of servings of fresh leafy greens are served safely everyday, more must be done in all growing regions. While we can’t prevent every outbreak, sharing & learning from others can limit consumers’ exposure to pathogens.
  • ·        Last week, I was able to visit the Yuma growing region. I saw firsthand that food safety is not a competitive issue. It was helpful to hear firsthand from growers about their 2018 romaine outbreak and the important actions taken to prevent reoccurrence https://go.usa.gov/xpmuk
  • ·        ALERT: FDA and the @PAHealthDept are investigating 31 cases of illnesses caused by Salmonella Javiana in PA w a possible link to fruit mix from Tailor Cut Produce of NJ, which has agreed to recall. We’ll continue to provide updates to the investigation https://go.usa.gov/xpyWG
  • ·        RT @LGMAnews: “The lessons we learned from last year’s outbreak in Yuma are proving valuable as we are investigating another outbreak associated with romaine from the Salinas, California growing region." -@FrankYiannasFDA
  • ·        #FDA In Brief: Here’s a readout of a visit I made this week to the Yuma produce growing region to meet with stakeholders & farmers. Food safety requires collaboration, sharing of best practices, & applying lessons learned.

@FDAfood

  • ·        FDA/CDC issued advisory 11/22 warning consumers to not eat any romaine lettuce grown in the Salinas area; industry initiated a voluntary withdrawal of romaine harvested from the region. Romaine lettuce from Salinas should no longer be in commerce, but advisory remains in effect.
  • ·        FDA is aware of this recall traced to Salinas, California and is working with Canadian authorities on their outbreak investigation. Do not eat this product if you have it. http://ift.tt/2sTwRP6
  • ·        Bacteria can be lurking in uncooked flour . Handle flour wisely by following these safety steps. https://go.usa.gov/xpnHU

@FDARecalls

  • ·        Tailor Cut Produce Recalls Cut Fruit Mix Because of Possible Health Risk https://go.usa.gov/xpVgM
  • ·        White Castle Frozen Food Division Announces Voluntary Recall of a Limited Production of Frozen Sandwiches Sold in Select Grocery Outlets Due to Possible Presence of Listeria Monocytogenes https://go.usa.gov/xpVgK
  • ·        Tropical Nut and Fruit Co. Issues Allergy Alert of Undeclared Soy and Tree Nut (Almonds) on Their Truly Good Foods South of the Border Mix https://go.usa.gov/xpVgD

@FDA_ORA

  • ·        The FDA is providing flexibility for when states may begin conducting routine inspections of small farms, other than sprouts operations, under the Food Safety Modernization Act (#FSMA) #ProduceSafetyRule. LEARN MORE: https://go.usa.gov/xpyrd
