Job Description

Position Definition:  Performs professional work in an environmental control program such as air quality, water quality, water supply, integrated solid waste management, chemical technology, hazardous waste technology, or underground storage tanks; or performs work in sanitation evaluation and regulation regarding food service, processing and storage; cosmetology and barber shops, and lodging establishments; or biological/environmental management program; conducts inspections and evaluations; performs related work as required.
Position Description:  This position will be responsible for completing inspections and complaint investigations in food and lodging.  Will have primary inspection area, but may be assigned anywhere in the State of Iowa.  Some overnight travel is required, with occasional travel outside the area. Food science selective required (18 semester hours or 6 months experience with food science or related areas).  Essential functions include ability to drive a car; ability to think, reason, and problem solve; agility to perform inspections, i.e. bend from the waist daily, stoop daily, and climb ladders up to 25 feet occasionally, lift up to 50 pounds shoulder height occasionally; ability to read, write legibly, and make presentations; ability to communicate effectively.  Those employees conducting federal inspections will require a background check.  Salary will be entry level unless otherwise dictated by DAS/HRE rules.

NOTE:  The domicile for this position is Home-based and the incumbent must reside in Polk, Story, Marshall, Hardin or Hamilton Counties.
Essential Functions:  Ability to travel between work sites; ability to think, reason and problem solve; agility to perform inspections.  Must be able to bend from the waist, stoop, climb ladders up to 25 feet, lift up to 50 pounds shoulder height.  Ability to read, write clearly and legibly; able to give presentations.  Ability to communicate effectively with confrontational people and people of a diverse background.  Must be able meet requirements and successfully be standardized to the FDA’s Retail Food Code within 18 months of hire.


Minimum Qualification Requirements

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in a natural science.

Selective Definitions

941 Food Science
12 semester hours in microbiology, biology, food science, chemistry, hospitality management or other science related to food safety OR 6 months of experience applying food science and microbiology knowledge to prepare or process food safely, including but not limited to managing a food establishment’s food safety program, quality assurance staff, chef, or management of a food establishment or manufacturing facility; experience applying food safety regulations such as the FDA Food Code or Good Manufacturing Practices; or a combination of both experience and education.
