Resolution Year 2002 Resolution Number 3: Food Code Revision and Publication Cycles
Whereas, The model Food Code provides valuable guidance on food safety, sanitation and fair dealing to local, state and federal agencies as well as to the retail segment of the food industry, and
Whereas, Input from Food Code users, new developments in the industries, and new or revised regulations necessitate periodic updating of the Food Code to keep it accurate and timely, and
Whereas, The current procedure is for the FDA to revise the Food Code every two years and reissue it as either a supplement to the existing edition or as a new edition, based on the extent of revision, and
Whereas, This two-year schedule has presented a problem for both the FDA, due to the volume of work involved and the time necessary for printing the new document, and for most states who then need to change their regulations to stay in line with the Food Code, and
Whereas, The Conference for Food Protection (CFP), at its 2002 Conference in April, voted in favor of changing the two-year revision cycle to a four-year cycle, and will be recommending this to the FDA, therefore be it
Resolved, That AFDO formally notify the FDA that it endorses the CFP’s recommended change to the four-year revision and publication cycle.
Board Recommendation: Approved as submitted.
