Whereas, USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is responsible for the regulation of meat and poultry processing plants and is aware of firms which are in the process of initiating a recall because of violative products and
Whereas, when a recall is initiated, a press release is issued which describes what product(s) are being recalled, the manufacturer of the product(s), the reason for recall, and the scope of product distribution and
Whereas, AFDO fully supports that a recall is necessary in order to prevent the public from consuming product which may or will cause foodborne illness and
Whereas, AFDO members represent time zones located west of USDA/FSIS Headquarters and therefore conduct business after USDA/FSIS Headquarters is closed and
Whereas, AFDO members receive media and consumer inquiries relative to the product being recalled in their state and Whereas, AFDO members have extensive experience in recall activities and are familiar with local food distribution patterns and
Whereas, if USDA/FSIS can give prior notification, AFDO and its affiliates will be able to assist in assuring that recalled product is contained quickly and that media and consumer inquires can be answered in a more timely and satisfactory fashion.
Resolved, that AFDO formally request USDA/FSIS to notify states who have recalled product prior to a press release announcement.
