Resolution Year 2000 Resolution Number 2: Memorial Resolution Honoring Abraham E. Abrahamson
Whereas, Abraham (Abe) Abrahamson passed away January 2, 2000, just short of his 94th birthday, and
Whereas, Over the years, Abe was very active in the NY Conference, CASA, and AFDO, serving on numerous CASA committees, as President of CASA in 1956, and being the very first recipient of the CASA Award in 1958, and
Whereas, The following graduation from the Columbia School of Pharmacy he joined the New York City Health Department in 1927 in the Bureau of Food and Drugs, and in 1940 became Chief of its Wholesale Food Division, and
Whereas, Mr. Abrahamson instituted many significant innovations in the New York City Health Department's inspection program including bacteriological and chemical testing of perishable foods and ready to eat foods, and was also responsible for one of the first cooperative programs of a local health agency working closely with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and
Whereas, Mr. Abrahamson retired in 1971 as an Assistant Commissioner in the New York City Health Department, after 45 years of service, at which time, he was recognized and honored by Mayor John Lindsey of New York City and many distinguished officials throughout the USA, for his outstanding service to the people of the City of New York and his far reaching contributions to food safety, now therefore be it
Resolved, That AFDO in conference assembled on this 21st day of June, 2000 pay tribute to the many contributions to the health of the consumer made by our departed friend and colleague Abraham E. Abrahamson, by observing an appropriate period of silent meditation at this meeting, and be it further
Resolved, That a copy of this resolution be delivered to his wife, Lee, so that she and her family will be fully aware of the esteem and affection in which Abe was held by his colleagues.
